Jesusland...What does it mean to you?

I've been listening to a lot of Ben Folds lately, leading up to our meet and greet concert in August. I've taken it upon myself to start listening closer to lyrics and less to the song as a whole. I was driving around today and listening to one of BF's older albums, "Songs for Silverman" (which coincidentally has the song that our daughter was named after). I heard the song Jesusland, and the longer I listened to it, the more it made sense. I must have listened to it 4-5 times before making my own interpretation of the lyrics.  When I parked at the grocery store, I looked up the songs actual meaning on one of my favorite websites only to discover I wasn't far off.
My family and friends (and friends family) may be reading this and thinking "my lord, this kid is off the beaten path." That may be true, but like any other self proclaimed religion, I have my own beliefs in what I believe "God" means. Now, does that mean I am not christian? Maybe to some people this is how it seems, but I assure you, my family is very spiritual. My children will be raised exactly as I was....Learn and Know the bible. However, when my children get old enough to start asking questions, and make sound decisions, it will be their decision which religious path they choose, and I support them 100%.
With all of that out of the way, I will get back to my original point. I apologize for the ramblings, but there may be some people that need to understand my point of view. Jesusland is about the mass commercialization of Religion (in whatever form it takes for you). It illustrates Jesus walking through America. What would he think? How would he feel? "You" in the song represents Jesus, I believe, and it really hits home once you think about the lyrics. Not everyone is guilty of commercialization, but I think that any person would agree on at least some points that the song makes. Without further rambling, I present to you, Jesusland by Ben Folds. I will warn you, the first 5 seconds are hard to listen too....Nobody likes a clashing harmony...

Take a walk
out the gate you go and never stop
past all the stores and wig shops
quarter in a cup for every block
and watch the buildings grow
smaller as you go

Down the tracks
beautiful McMansions on a hill
that overlook a highway
with riverboat casinos and you still
have yet to see a soul

Jesusland
Jesusland

Town to town
broadcast to each house, they drop your name
but no one knows your face
Billboards quoting things you'd never say
you hang your head and pray

for Jesusland
Jesusland

Miles and miles
and the sun goin' down
Pulses glow
from their homes
You're not alone
Lights come on
as you lay your weary head on their lawn

Parking lots
cracked and growing grass you see it all
from offices to farms
crosses flying high above the malls
A longer walk

through Jesusland
Jesusland

  1. Bearing in mind that any religion is prone to change depending on leaders, motives, ruling kings, upper echelon society etc, I think it's all lost the basis of the original message whatever the religion, it comes down to
"be nice to one another" ..everything else is wrapped up in all sorts of trouble from those who wish to beat folk down & have more hold upon them.
I like churches, history & architecture, I like the priests & vicars you can talk to with no airs & graces, as these are the sort of folk who you are most likely to respect & take advice from over a period rather than through fear & what the rest of the local church hierachy think, & as to whether it met with their approval (or snubbing) ..unfortunately it gets very cliquey at a local level especially.
I cannot support the Catholic church on the basis of it's very prominent skeletons, abuse, child abuse, taking children & sending them across the world where they suffer to this day having fought to understand, (often via alcohol & drugs) whilst telling the original parent(s) a nice place was found & it's best if you don't contact them.
The Papacy is rather like fifa & the olympic organisers, full of corrupt old men with their own agendas, not there to promote harmony through religion / sport etc but to take bribes, & manipulate for their own ill gotten gains.
..amongst that though there are some good folk with heart & soul, hopefully to remain un-corrupted at cost of "promotion".

Trying to live a fair life isn't that hard if you have free thought in the first place.
Religion isn't a necessity, being vaguely spiritual / appreciative of what is out there in terms of our beautiful planet, & aware of others is.

My daughter at 7 has made her own mind up to this point, & it will change depending on her own experiences, for instance I do not shield her from good news sources, she has already fired off letters of disgust to the prime minister & our mp at with regards to police brutality & death of an innocent she witnessed on tv.
Point is we can indoctrinate them, have them sit through a very boring sermon they neither like nor understand, or we can teach them about the world & it's occupants, making stronger more caring kids who will try & do right & discuss what they've seen, ..(between episodes of the simpsons).
To me that hour of pulpit preaching is wasted, when you can form a better connection & subsequent relationship with your own progeny point things out & examine their feelings & emotions properly you actively promote religion in it's best form, free thought.
Spend time with your children you are their best guide in life, any understanding you give them to deal with life outside a localised bubble is surely a good thing & a reason we stopped at one child (hey the planets tit's up & too amny people, having shedloads of kids in the hope that they'll be swept upstairs in the holy rapture,..yeah right).
Teach them to engage with other folk, travel, & talk to folk of different cultures, it's those who can walk & talk between cultures & nations who help keep things sane when insanity breaks out!
Live in a city, have a city view & perspective.
Live in the world, & have a world perspective, ..travel not necessarily required!
